Gifts to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion contribute to...
At Wheaton College, we seek to foster a collective sense of engagement, affirmation, and belonging, where everyone is proud to be a member of the community. Wheaton’s history of commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging goes back centuries. Since our founding in 1834, Wheaton has focused on expanding access to a rigorous liberal arts education. It began with offering women an education equal to that provided to men and has continued, for example, with initiatives like our over 20-year partnership with the Posse Foundation.
Supporting First-Generation Students
Approximately 20 percent of all students at Wheaton are the first in their families to attend college or come from low-income backgrounds. In 2016, Wheaton formed the First-Gen and Low-Income Task Force to explore effective methods to dismantle barriers to success and fulfillment for these students. During the Spring of 2021, Wheaton College was selected as a First-gen Forward institution, a national honor that recognizes its commitment to the success of first-generation college students. This recognition is attributed to the fact that Wheaton has demonstrated a commitment to improving its first-generation college students' experiences and advancing outcomes.
Ecosystem of Equity
The college has undertaken significant work to retool our approach to equity, accessibility, belonging, inclusion, and social justice. In March of 2021, the college created the Office for Institutional Equity and Belonging and named Dean Shaya Gregory Poku as Wheaton’s inaugural Associate Vice President, a senior-level position focused on leading Wheaton’s ecosystem of equity. Since the inception of this office, Wheaton College has been selected to receive a Providence Business News 2021 Diversity and Inclusion Award in recognition of exceptional efforts in promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace and is also being recognized on the 2021–22 Equity and Inclusion Colleges of Distinction list.
Support a transformative educational experience rooted in 187 years of innovation in the liberal arts and enriched by a deep commitment to the principles of social justice, diversity, and inclusion with a gift through the Wheaton Fund today.
President Hanno has been an innovative leader who has made significant contributions and inspired and created change that will benefit this institution and students for generations to come. As president, his incredible energy and abundance of good cheer instilled pride in Wheaton that students, faculty and staff, alumni, parents, and friends will carry with them forever.
